Now that our opening weekend is behind us, Portland Paddle
is excited to be hosting our first Wednesday Skills Session of the summer on June 5th!
Anyone who wants to work on some kayaking skill can show up at the East End Beach
(find our van by the kayak racks) between 4:30 and 6:30 for advice and feedback
from our staff and other paddlers.
Check in at the Paddle Van when you arrive and let our staff know that you'd like to participate. The cost is $5 if you're using your own boat and $20 if you'd like to use one of ours. We also have wetsuits to rent if you're planning to practice skills that might involve getting wet.
We won't have any particular plans or activities planned for the session, so you should come with questions you'd like to ask or ideas about something you'd like to learn. You might also take the opportunity to go for a paddle.
If you're not sure what skills to work on at the Skills Session, here are some recommendations:
- Draw stroke (including sculling draw)
- Stern rudder
- Bow rudder
- Low brace
- High brace
- Sweep stroke
- Wet exits
- Paddle Float Rescue
- Tandem Recue
- Scoop Rescue
- Towing techniques
- Choosing a boat
- Reading a chart
- Trip planning
We hope that our Skills Sessions provide an affordable way for local kayakers to build the skills needed to paddle safely on Casco Bay. And we also think it's a great way to meet other kayakers.
Give us a call or shoot us an email if you have questions. Hope to see you this Wednesday!
