Solar Eclipse Paddle
A Special Celestial Kayak Tour
1PM to 4PM on August 21
$55 per person
On Monday, August 21 the moon will cross in front of the sun, creating a rare solar eclipse across the United States. What better place to view this astronomical wonder then from the sea of a sea kayak on Casco Bay!
We’ve created a special kayak tour that’s timed just right with the eclipse. The tour will include all the elements of our regular kayak tours but will also offer the opportunity to observe the moon’s path across the sun from several vantage points. We’ll aim to land at Fort Gorges during the peak of the eclipse so that we can view the phenomenon from atop the fort’s walls.
Our tour, which begins at 1pm and ends at 4pm, is designed to last for the entirety of the eclipse. According to the Portland Press Herald, “in Greater Portland the eclipse will begin about 1:30 in the afternoon, peak about about 2:45 p.m. and end a few minutes before 4 p.m.” Although we’ll only see a partial eclipse in Maine it should still be quite a sight to behold.
This tour, which is open to paddlers of all skill levels, will begin with a brief lesson on the basics of sea kayaking. We have both solo and tandem sea kayaks, and we’ll provide a dry bag so you can bring along a camera, phone, snack or other items.
We will not be providing any special equipment for viewing the eclipse, so you should plan to bring your own for the best viewing experience. For tips on various viewing methods check out this website:Â https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/eclipse-who-what-where-when-and-how
